Easter message to law enforcement agencies from MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma
12 April 2025 | From Arrive Alive

"As law enforcement officers, you must have no mercy on those committing the following offenses:-
1. Drinking and driving: South Africa has the highest number of alcohol-related road traffic deaths at 57.5%. We have orphans, widows and families that have been destroyed as a result of one drunkard. We don’t want KZN to contribute to the national figure of fatalities as a result of one drunk person. As law enforcement officers you are mandated to arrest those motorists and send them to jail. They must be allowed to sober up behind bars and be released on bail after 21 April.
2. We will work with National Prosecuting Authority in order to ensure a successful prosecution and conviction of a prison sentence of six years. The fine of between R2000 and R120 000 is not enough. We must aim for a prison sentence in order to end this scourge.
3. Speeding and reckless drivers: There is a speed limit of 120km per hour on our roads. But we have reckless drivers who are responsible for the carnage on our roads. Arrest them as well to send a strong message.
4. Unroadworthy vehicles or moving coffins: We wish to warn motorists upfront. If your car is unroadworthy or if you know that you obtained a roadworthiness certificate fraudulently – don’t take a chance. We have experienced an increase in the number of crashes and fatalities as a result of moving coffins. We will impound your vehicle. And don’t be suprized if you spend the whole Easter weekend in jail.
5. Seatbelts: We continue to remind motorists that seatbelt-wearing reduces fatalities by 70%. We are informed that only 31% of front-seat passengers in South Africa buckle up. Here in KZN we fined 673 motorists for not wearing seatbelts this past festive season. Law enforcement officers must fine those who fail to wear seatbelts.
