The Cross-Border Road Transport Agency (C-BRTA), under the leadership of the Department of Transport (DoT), will be taking the Cross-Alive Road Safety Campaign to the Eastern Cape Province on 14 April 2025 to promote road safety in an effort to ensure safe transportation of passengers and goods during Easter period.
The activation will take place at the Coega Special E conomic Zone, following the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between the C-BRTA and the Coega Development Corporation to improve the competitiveness of the transport sector, contribute to road safety, and enhance the capabilities of the local workforce through skills development and training programmes.
The Eastern Cape Province is counted among the provinces in South Africa that have, over the years, witnessed an increase in road accidents and fatalities, exacerbated by high traffic volumes, non-compliance with road safety regulations, and increased movement during peak seasons.
Given this picture of rising fatalities and non-compliance issues, a multi-faceted, high-impact intervention is required to reduce road accidents and fatalities. It is for this reason that the Cross-Alive Road Safety Campaign is a targeted road safety initiative designed to:
• Promote responsible driving behaviour among all road users.
• Increase law enforcement interventions to curb violations.
• Enhance compliance with road safety regulations through strict monitoring and penalties.
• Engage communities, transport operators, and policymakers in long-term road safety improvements.
The C-BRTA will partner with other Law Enforcement Authorities and road safety champions as part of the campaign to ensure maximum impact in ensuring that the messages reach the intended road users in the area.
The Agency’s campaign follows the National Launch of the Easter Road Safety Campaign by the Minister of Transport, Ms. Barbara Creecy on 20 March 2025. With the theme of the campaign being; “It begins with Me,” the Minister indicated that the Department of Transport
chose this theme because driver and pedestrian behaviour is responsible for 87% of road accidents and fatalities in the country. “ And so, reducing road fatalities and accidents is the responsibility of each one of us” said Minister Creecy.
The campaign launch was aimed at creating awareness on the importance of road safety ahead of the of the Easter period, which is considered a peak period for traffic. Due to the rise of traffic volumes along the major routes during this period, the country usually records high accident rates. It is for this reason that the Minister launched the 2025 Easter Season Road Safety Campaign in an effort to encourage all South Africans as well as road users from the neighbouring countries who will be travelling to-and-from South Africa, to keep safety in mind when traveling on the roads.
The details of the campaign are as follows:
Date: 14 April 2025
Time: 13h30
Location: Coega Special Economic Zone (Zone 1)
