With South Africa’s roads expected to be especially busy and hazardous over the Easter period, the Vehicle Testing Association (VTA), a proud association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), is once again running its annual Free Safety Campaign from 11 April to 17 April 2025.
As part of the campaign, participating VTA/RMI vehicle testing stations across the country will be offering motorists free safety-critical checks to ensure their vehicles are road-ready before setting off on their Easter holidays.
Julian Pillay, National Director of the VTA, says the initiative is a proactive step towards reducing road fatalities.
“The Easter holidays are, unfortunately, associated with a high number of road accidents. As the VTA and RMI, we are fully committed to promoting road safety, and this campaign is a simple but effective way to help motorists ensure their vehicles are in a safe condition before they travel,” he says.
The free check will cover vital safety items, including:
• All lights
• Seat belts
• Wipers
• Tyres
• Brakes
• Steering mechanism
• Suspension
• Exhaust system
• Indications of defective wheel alignment
Pillay emphasises that this is not a roadworthiness test, but a safety-critical inspection aimed at identifying potential hazards and preventing further damage or risk while on the road.
“By taking just a few minutes to have your vehicle inspected, you could be preventing a serious incident. It’s a small step that could save lives,” adds Pillay.
Motorists can contact their regional RMI office to find their nearest participating testing station but should be aware that at this stage there are unfortunately no participating stations in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Free State, and Eastern Cape.
“Let’s work together to make safety a priority this Easter - have your vehicle checked before you travel,” concludes Pillay.
