
A law enforcement operation resulted in the arrest of a syndicate involved in Cash-In-Transit (CIT) robberies, hijackings, armed robberies, and other violent crimes across Gauteng. The operation was carried out by SAPS Counter Intelligence Investigation Head Office, DPCI Gauteng Multi-Disciplinary Tracking Team, SAPS Gauteng TRT, SAPS Anti-Gang Unit, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations, Tracker Connect, and Gemini Global Defense.
Through intelligence gathering, authorities learned that the suspects were planning a CIT robbery in Johannesburg. The syndicate was reported to be heavily armed and utilizing at least three vehicles: a Mercedes-Benz C-Class, a Suzuki Swift, and a Toyota Quantum.
Officers spotted the suspects vehicles on Dobsonville Road entering Soweto, with false registration plates. When officers attempted to stop the Mercedes-Benz, the suspects opened fire, leading to a shootout. Two suspects were fatally wounded, and an unlicensed R5 rifle with ammunition was recovered.
Nearby, officers intercepted the Toyota Quantum and Suzuki Swift, which were traveling together. Five suspects were arrested, and multiple unlicensed firearms and ammunition were seized.
