How to treat burns

05 May 2024 | From Arrive Alive

Burns can vary in severity, ranging from minor discomfort to potentially life-threatening injuries. It is important to attend to burns quickly.

Here are some tips:

1. Remove Heat Source: Take away any hot object or liquid causing the burn immediately.

2. Cool the Burn: Apply cool water or a wet towel for 10-15 minutes to reduce swelling and pain.

3. Assess Severity: Determine if it's first, second, or third-degree based on symptoms. First-degree burns are mild and affect the outer layer of the skin, causing redness and pain. Second-degree burns are deeper and may cause blistering and severe pain. Third-degree burns are the most severe, penetrating all layers of the skin and potentially causing numbness due to nerve damage.

4. Cover the Burn: Use a sterile bandage to shield from dirt and bacteria.

5. Seek Medical Attention: For severe burns, those covering large areas, or affecting sensitive areas, seek immediate medical help.

6. Manage Pain: Use over-the-counter pain relievers as directed.

7. Do Not Pop Blisters: Leave blisters intact to avoid infection.

8. Keep Clean and Dry: Maintain cleanliness and dryness to prevent infection.

9. Monitor for Infection: Watch for signs like increased pain or swelling; seek medical help if suspected.
