Tshwane Metro Police Department initiated a gender-based violence awareness campaign in support of the 16 Days of Activism campaign
05 December 2023 | From Arrive Alive

As a contribution to the 16 Days of Activism campaign, the Tshwane Metro Police (TMPD) initiated an awareness campaign that is aimed at addressing the negative impact of violence and abuse of women and children with the objective to rid society of abuse permanently. This initiative is also used as the key to informing victims of their rights and the support services that are available to them.
The first awareness campaign was held in Hammanskraal at Jubilee Mall on Monday, 4 December 2023. The Chief of Police, Commissioner YCR Faro, led the campaign with TMPD regional members, TMPD social crime prevention members, and other stakeholders from the Department of Health, Department of Justice, Department of Social Development and members from the South African Police Service.
The awareness campaign was a success. About 600 people were reached and 800 gender-based violence pamphlets were issued. Two child maintenance warrants were issued and two suspects were arrested for non-compliance with child maintenance orders, while three suspects aged between 30 and 40 years were arrested for public drinking.
The Chief of Police, Commissioner YCR Faro, stated: “The awareness campaign is not only going to be for 16 days, but this initiative is also going to be throughout the coming years. We want to be the voice of the voiceless when it comes to crime against women and children.”
These gender-based violence campaigns will be an ongoing programme throughout all regions of Tshwane to eliminate violence and abuse against women and children.
Victims are encouraged to report abusers and to find support through supporting systems like the Department of Health, Department of Social Development, Department of Justice and South African Police Service.
Issued by the Tshwane Metro Police Communication Unit.
