An off-duty TMPD Officer stops a hijacking in progress
23 August 2019 | From Arrive Alive

The Tshwane Metro Police Constable was on his way home after going off duty on Thursday, 22 August 2019.
At around 19:40 while he was driving along the Brits Road and the R80 Mabopane Highway on-ramp, he noticed a vehicle that was in front of him approaching a red traffic light. Inside the vehicle was a female driver who was travelling alone. The vehicle stopped at the traffic light and two male suspects approached. One suspect went to the driver side while the other suspect, who had a firearm, went to the passenger side. He then broke the window and pointed the firearm at the female driver. When the Constable realised what was going on the swiftly responded and shot the suspect who was pointing a firearm at the female driver and demanding that she open the other window. The other suspect ran away and the wounded suspect was taken to hospital under police guard. He is facing charges of attempted hijacking and possession of an illegal firearm.
The Tshwane Metro Police Department is very proud of the Constable from the Drug Unit and commends him for his bravery. He surely did not hesitate to serve and protect, even when he was off duty. Well done officer, you are a true hero. The MMC of Community Safety Alderman Karen Meyer also expressed that She is extremely proud of the officer and She mentioned that this should set an example to other officers. The MMC mentioned also that the officer's work will be acknowledged. As the Department, We will work very hard to apprehend the other suspect.
Members of the community who might have any information with regard to this incident are urged to contact the nearest SAPS or TMPD at 012 358 7095 /6
