Revised Auris Hybrid offers effortless efficiency

15 September 2015 | Road Safety Highlights

  • Stylish new exterior design
  • Exclusive 17-inch Graphite metallic alloy wheels
  • Bi-LED headlamps for superb visibility
  • New interior design with serene blue illumination
  • Full colour TFT Multi information display with hybrid system operation display

Following the introduction of the refreshed petrol engine derivatives, the new Auris Hybrid bows in, offering customers the same revitalised product complimented by the ultra-efficient hybrid powertrain, to provide a harmonious driving experience.

Arresting looks

From an exterior styling point of view, the new Auris Hybrid builds upon the alluring façade of its gasoline burning relatives, featuring a prominent chrome brow which emerges from the centrally mounted Toyota emblem and extends across the front grille terminating in the sharply designed headlamp clusters incorporating Bi-LED lighting elements.

The lower grille, framed by a chrome accent strip, flows into the fog light surrounds and ties in with the upper grille to project a strong yet elegant image. These design elements are complimented by a number of unique Hybrid touches.

Signifying the hybrid status of the vehicle, the Toyota insignias on the front and rear are emblazoned with a 'cool' blue surround, creating a high-tech look. Exclusive 17" Graphite metallic alloy wheels adorn the exterior, portraying a sophisticated image to passers-by.

Moving to the rear of the vehicle, the rear bumper has been redesigned to place more emphasis on the broad stance of the vehicle. In hybrid configuration, the exhaust tail piece is located behind the lower valance, creating a clean, uncluttered look. A shark fin antennae adds a sense of style to the rear.

The rear lamp clusters incorporate 'light guides' which create a distinctive signature.

Hybrid badges placed on the two front fenders and rear boot lid proudly convey the alternative energy status of the model.

Hybrid Synergy Drive

Powering the Auris Hybrid, is the proven 1.8 litre VVT-i Atkinson cycle engine which is paired with a high voltage battery and highly efficient motor generator, which combine to form the Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) system. The HSD system delivers a combined total system output of 100 kW. On the torque front the electric motor provides a generous 207 Nm which supplements the 142 Nm produced by the petrol engine.

A bespoke switchable EV mode is available, which allows the driver to operate the vehicle in 100% electric mode up to a speed of 40 km/h dependant on the state of charge of the battery. In this 'green' mode the Auris uses no fuel, emits zero emissions and provides a whisper quiet driving experience as it simply whirrs by.

The advanced powertrain is mated to a seamless, planetary gear based Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), which transmits the power to the front wheels. The vehicle is also equipped with Power and Eco modes, which reprogram the engine and transmission's control logic, to suit the requirements of the driver.

In Power mode the throttle response is sharpened and more linear throttle mapping applied. Eco mode conversely reduces throttle sensitivity and focuses on maximising fuel economy and cruising range.

Sumptuous Specification

Fitting with the flagship status of the Hybrid model, it is available exclusively in top of the range Xr grade specification.

The Xr grade offers passengers a multitude of comfort and convenience features, which add to the pleasurable driving experience of the vehicle. The Smart Entry system provides effortless access, as you slide into the finely-trimmed leather upholstery with contrast stitching. Dual mode seat heaters in the front provide a cosseted environment, with electric lumbar support for the driver rounding off the 'seating specification'.

Providing the in-car entertainment is a touch screen display audio system with 6-speakers, which also features continuous scrolling to allow easy operation. CD, USB, iPod and auxiliary inputs are all catered for. The driver is able to efficiently navigate through the menu options using the directional switches mounted on the sporty 3-spoke steering wheel. In addition, the display audio further functions as monitor to project the image from the reverse camera for added convenience.

Housed in the redesigned instrument binnacle, is the new full colour Thin Film Transistor (TFT) Multi Information Display with a unified blue background. The display communicates a vast array of information to the driver, including audio information, trip info and fuel consumption, Bluetooth phone communication and vehicle settings. The driver can also opt to view the hybrid system operation, which indicates the power source(s) used for propulsion, battery state of charge and EV mode operation, within quick glance.

Subtle blue illumination is used throughout the interior to create a sophisticated, serene environment for occupants.

Peace of Mind

Rigorously assessed for performance and durability, and backed up by over 14 years of in-service experience, the full hybrid battery is designed to last the entire life of the car. The new Auris Hybrid benefits from a three year/100,000km warranty extended to eight years/195,000km on hybrid system components, including the battery. As with other Auris models, the new HSD range comes with a standard five-year/ 90 000 km service plan.

The new models are also supported by the ToyotaCare Roadside Assistance Programme which entitles customers to 24-hour roadside assistance, ensuring ultimate peace-of-mind motoring.
